casebolt and smith. They talk and dance. They sing and dance. And sometimes, they just dance. Liz Casebolt and Joel Smith craft duets that reveal a shared commitment to artistry and experimentation. The two move between chatty and scripted conversation, with each other and the audience, offering honest insights into their choreographic methods and collaborative rapport. Their work plays with the gender and sexuality politics embedded in male/ female partnerships, and comments on the sometimes overly serious traditions of modern dance. Founded in 2006 and based in Los Angeles, casebolt and smith is on a mission to share their work with broad and diverse audiences through performance, teaching residencies and commissions.

casebolt and smith has presented work at: Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, Belfast; Vancouver International Dance Festival, Canada; Joyce SoHo, NewYork; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; Spring to Dance Festival, St.Louis; St. John’s University, St. Cloud; ODC’s Walking Distance Dance Festival, San Francisco; Contemporary Art Forum, Santa Barbara; CounterPulse, San Francisco; Diavolo Dance Space, Los Angeles; Culver Center for the Arts, Riverside; Herberger Theater, Phoenix; Tempe Center for the Arts, Tempe; Helen Gardiner Phelan Playhouse, Toronto, CAN; and the Rachel Browne Theatre, Winnipeg, CAN. casebolt and smith was commissioned by The Wooden Floor (formerly Saint Joseph Ballet) to create a world premiere for their annual New Dance Festival, and have set choreography on students at various Southern California colleges including Cerritos College and Scripps College. In 2012, they were recipients of a Gluck Fellowship, were invited to speak at the Los Angeles Community Arts Resources annual Arts Summit, and produced a six week run of O(h) at the Actors Company Theatre in Los Angeles. They have taught masterclasses at UC Irvine, California Institute of the Arts, University of Surrey, DanceTheatre of Ireland, Dance Resource Base Belfast, St. Joseph’s College Brooklyn,College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University, The Boys and Girls Club of America, and the Marlborough School for Girls.

Most recently, casebolt and smith completed a 17 show tour to Toronto, Winnipeg and San Francsico, and was commissioned by DanceWorks Chicago to create a new work on their company.  In 2014, casebolt and smith will be in residence at University of Nevada, Reno and will have performances of O(h) at South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center and the 92nd Street Y’s Harkness Dance Festival in New York City.

Liz Casebolt is an Assistant Professor of Dance at Los Angeles Valley College, and Joel Smith is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Dance at University of California, Riverside.
